References are things that point to or designate something else. It acts as the link between two objects or items. It can also be seen as a short note that deals with the source or a quoted passage from the source.
References are made to memoir, bulletin, reports, papers, journal, periodical, series, article, research, experiments, books, symposium volume, compendium volume, charts, e-book, abstract, thesis, map, formulas, tables, documents, dictionary, encyclopedia and open file or a database.
Types of references are quotes, reproductions, mentioning, linking, hyper linking, redirection or producing excerpts as synopsis.
Abbreviations like UN (United Nations), IMF (International Monetary Fund), WHO (World Health Organization), US (United States), UK (United Kingdom), and GUI (Graphical User Interface) are often used for references.
In office procedures references are made to files, correspondence, notes, memoirs, applications, resolutions, rules, regulations, acts, orders, , and precedence cases,
Legal references are made to courts, judgments, precedence, constitution, acts, rules, customs, conventions, contracts, terms and conditions etc.
In policy making references are made to traditions, legalities, customs, conventions, treaties, social systems, reasoning, popular demand and public requirements. Political parties in Government often make reference to their political manifesto.
In employment and selection for job references relates to conduct, past history, academic qualifications, carrier, testimonials, police records, family and ethnic background etc.
In literary works academicians make references to articles from journal, papers from conferences, interviews, newspaper and TV reports, text books and websites on the nets, book reference, and chapters from research and scholarly works.
Bibliography contains the list of references used by an author for any work.
In Computer technology references could be from internal or external storage. Linking with other websites, pages, search engines, web directories, stores, forums, business platforms, mails and chats are external references. Hyper linking with pages or topics stored inside own hard disk are internal reference.
Traditional references include books, subjects of education, quotations and excerpts from eminent authors and database field references.
Reference to glossary and thesaurus are made to find out meaning of the words or their synonyms. Reference can be made in respect of bilateral or multilateral treaties and conventions.
