Internet can be viewed as architecture for interconnecting independent networks and afterwards federating them into a seamless whole while maintaining the independent characteristics of the member networks. A global information system that is logically linked through unique IP address system and able to extend the communication through TCP.

Communication over Internet is carried out with World Wide Web or WWW, email, online chatting, voice mail, url listing, search engine and search engine optimization or SEO, web directory, and Internet Service Provider.

Access to remote servers is possible using url, unique IP address globally. LAN or Local Area Network and WAN or Wide Area Network connects gateway to the Internet.

General use of Internet is for surfing the web and visiting different web sites for viewing and collecting information. Electronic mail or email is used for communicating with others and exchange of messages, to discuss with far away people and to meet people.

Internet is used to access general information about a subject and information not readily available elsewhere. Learning, getting fun, reading news, finding software and buying things are other uses.

People also use Internet for advertising, selling products, making money and for sharing of knowledge.

Commercially Internet is used for - Affiliate marketing on line to tap unexplored market, shopping cart for online placement of orders, and business platforms for exchange of goods and services online, e-marketing, electronic fund transfer, currency exchanges and other online business purposes.

Information gathering through Internet can be done using Web Directories, Article directories, surfing the websites, remote access to databases, and downloading information online.

Standard protocols like Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Internet Protocol (IP), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Domain Name System (DNS) regulate all activities on the nets. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or DHCP enables communication between two remote servers.

Viewing on Internet includes the websites, video clippings, movies, streaming video and is combined with audio listening. ActiveX controls are needed for such viewing.
Messaging on Internet is accomplished using Instant Message Access Protocol (IMAP) for client access of mails, Internet Protocol Encryption Components and Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.

Internet as the best platform for exchange of opinion uses Message Boards, discussion forums and blog forums.
