Recreation can be seen as an activity that diverts and in result amuses and stimulates the mind and body. The definition has no universal applicability since it is more a state of mind of the person concerned than the state of the activity. Recreation may take any form from sports and leisure to relaxing on the beach and viewing shows.

Types of recreation can be entertainment, movies, shows, cultural programs, travel, dining, scuba diving, water sports, trekking, leisure and rest, dance, song and music, outing and any such thing that diverts your mind from the routine and gives peace and enjoyment.

Recreation aims at relaxation, reduction of stress, sound sleep, reduction of anxieties, taking a break from rigorous daily routines, alerting mind, and to calm the body.
Community recreation is available with newspapers, newsletters, ads, craft stores, community schools, churches, theater halls, and cultural centers, gyms and parks or beaches.

Fitness recreation can be availed in exercise clubs, gyms, training centers, Yoga classes, meditation centers and training tracks for running and jogging and walking etc.
Spiritual recreation may be availed in churches, temples, mosques, religious places, prayer halls, rites and rituals.

Basic ingredients of recreation are relaxation, refreshment and enjoyment.
Common methods of recreation are viewing movies, shows, dance and music, social gathering, sports events, swimming, strolling, discussion, refreshment and relaxation and traveling.

Recreation is a state of mind and its meaning differs from person to person. For some people, antique collection is also recreation and for others is automotive riding.
Inactive recreation is enjoying leisure whereas normal recreation is an active state.
